Delhi LG rejects GGSIPU proposal to charge affiliation fees to govt colleges – ThePrint – PTIFeed

New Delhi, Nov 30 (PTI) Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Saturday rejected a proposal to levy affiliation fees to government colleges by the GGSIPU, citing concerns over its potential to increase the financial burden on students.

The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) has proposed to collect affiliation fees from government colleges and other institutions by amending Clause 5 of Statute 24 of the University, a release from the LG’s office said.

“Had the University’s proposal to collect affiliation fees from them been approved, it would have ultimately resulted in shifting the additional financial burden to the students,” the LG’s office said.

According to Statute 24, Clause 5, “Affiliation fee shall be levied from all self-financing institutions, while no processing fee or affiliation fee shall be levied from colleges or institutions established and run by the Central Government or a State Government or wholly funded by the Central Government or a State Government.” Expressing concern over the implications of the proposal, the LG noted that “meritorious students, many from poor economic backgrounds, generally get admission in government colleges on the basis of their talent alone, and approval of the University’s proposal may jeopardize the future of these students talented ” Saxena pointed out that government institutes already bear significant financial responsibilities, including application fees for provisional affiliation and continued affiliation, which vary depending on the course and location of the institute.

In addition, these institutes have to pay affiliation fees after receiving approval for provisional affiliation, the release said.

The LG also suggested that GGSIPU explore “alternative methods of generating revenue to augment its budget” to meet its financial requirements without affecting students. PTI SJJ HIG HIG
