Woman dies after alleged domestic violence in Maheshwaram

Hyderabad: A woman died in a hospital while undergoing treatment after she was allegedly beaten up by her husband at her residence in Maheshwaram police station limits on Thursday. The victim’s family accused the police of negligence in solving the case.

“We have lodged a complaint with the Maheshwaram police five times before regarding her husband’s violence but have not received any response from them. They would make false assurances of registering an FIR but did not do so until the situation worsened. A few days after the FIR was finally registered, my sister succumbed to her injuries,” said Ramesh, brother of the deceased. Deccan Chronicle.

According to Maheshwaram Inspector H Venkateshwarulu, the deceased was identified as 25-year-old Santosha and her husband as Santosh. Santosha died while undergoing treatment at a government hospital at 7 am on Thursday.

In 2019, Santosha was married to Santosh along with a dowry of Rs 8 lakh given to the husband’s family. In a span of four to five years, the couple had two children.

As time passed, Santosh allegedly beat the deceased, forcing her to get more money from her family in the form of dowry.

“He later entered into a relationship with another woman. He physically and mentally harassed her almost every day. After my sister found out about it three days ago, she confronted him. In response, he allegedly beat her with sticks, kicked her in the stomach and left her on the road, asking her not to return home.”

Nowhere, the victim got in touch with her family, who immediately informed the police. “I have counseled him before. He didn’t change his habits. So we registered a case three days ago,” the inspector said.

The case was initially registered under sections 85, 118(1) and 352 of the NBS.

On Thursday morning, when Santosha again complained of excruciating pain, she was shifted to Maheshwaram Government Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at 7 am.

Following this, the charges against Santosh were amended to Sections 80 (dowry death), 85 (cruelty to women) and 103 (punishment for murder) of the NBS. He was taken into police custody, the inspector said.

“We are still not sure what caused his death. Multiple blunt force injuries were found on the victim’s body, but no bleeding wounds. We are awaiting reports from the forensic laboratory to reach a conclusion about her death,” the inspector said.

However, the victim’s brother claimed that his sister died due to her husband’s torture.
