A man has died after he told police he was repeatedly punched by the suspect in Newport

PORTLAND Hours. (KPTV) – A man has been charged with assault and battery after he allegedly attacked another man at his Newport home Wednesday, according to the Newport Police Department.

Around 9:00 p.m., police responded to 207 Northwest 15th Street after reports of a fight.

According to witnesses and the victim, Jeffrey Sutton, who lived there, Mark Rodgers, 68, was intoxicated and became “belligerent”. Sutton said she asked Rodgers to leave her home. Rodgers allegedly responded by punching Sutton repeatedly in the head and body.

Sutton was conscious when police arrived, but while speaking with officers, NPD said Sutton began to have trouble breathing and showed “signs of respiratory distress.”

Despite first aid from police and emergency medical personnel, Sutton lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene around 9:30 p.m.

Rodgers was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He was booked into the Lincoln County Jail.
