Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch looks set to win a Dáil seat amid countdown to 2024 general election

Convicted murderer Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is in the running to win a Dáil seat and become the chief executive for the Dublin Central constituency as the count begins in 2024 general election.

After 100% of the boxes were counted in the constituency on Saturday morning, Hutch is in fourth place in the four-seat constituency. He garnered over 9% of the vote and looks likely to win a seat over TD and Green Party candidate Neasa Hourigan.

The monk sensationally announced plans to run earlier this month after returning from Lanzarote, where he was arrested on money laundering charges. At the time, Hutch denied the charges and said he was “innocent” and did not believe the arrest would hurt his election hopes.

It seems he was right as he is well in the hunt for the fourth and final spot. His election is not guaranteed, with Labour’s Marie Sherlock set to receive transfers and challenge him for the final seat.

In the same constituency, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald appears to be leading the poll with around 20% of the vote. She will be trailed back to the Dáil by Fine Gael’s Paschal Donohoe and Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon with around 17% and 13% respectively.

Transfers will decide fourth place and while Marie Sherlock is likely to receive transfers after the election of those above her, the monk is likely to transfer favorably from the candidates below him as they are eliminated, including far-right candidate Malachy Steenson and Independents 4 Change. candidate Clare Daly.

Counting is now underway, with a first count expected late Saturday afternoon.
