The Tewksbury grocery chain may be headed to Seekonk.

Market Basket has a plan in the works to open a grocery store in a Seekonk movie theater space.

DeMoulas Super Markets Inc., the parent company of Market Basket, has notified the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act Office (MEPA) that it plans to redevelop a 16-acre site at 100 Commerce Way in Seekonk, according to a WCVB. report.

Property records show the company bought the property for $9.5 million from NAI Entertainment Holdings in July.

The plan includes the redevelopment of three new buildings, the largest of which is the current location of Showcase Cinemas. The use of the other two smaller buildings has not been determined, according to the report.

In his submission to MEPA, DeMoulas noted the minimal impact the project will have on the local environment and emphasized the high level of economic activity in the area.

“No off-site alternative was considered for redevelopment of this site as this prime location provides the best reuse of the property while minimizing the environmental impacts typically associated with development on previously undeveloped land,” the company wrote in the document. “Furthermore, Seekonk has identified this site as being within the area of the largest focal point of economic activity in the community and is widely recognized as an indispensable resource to the city’s tax base.”

The closest market bins to Seekonk are located in Fall River, Raynham and Attleboro. No date has been announced for the redevelopment of the Seekonk site.
