TU alumni urge fresh coaching talent and local recruitment to revive football success

The University of Tulsa football team wrapped up its final game of the season.

This after their coach, Kevin Wilson was fired on Sunday.

While all the parents I spoke to did not want to talk about Coach Wilson’s firing, fans who spoke to me say they are not surprised by the move.

“It’s part of the game. I feel bad for him, but he knows that,” said University of Tulsa alumnus and fan Mike Butcher.

He believes that more people will start going to the games if TU starts to have a winning streak.

And he says that for them to start winning again, TU needs talent and a coach who knows how to use it.

“Those good teams. There’s always that one guy that’s amazing. That’s what YOU need,” Butcher said.

Today TU played the Florida Atlantic Owls, losing 63-16.

“It’s time to bring in a younger guy that has a lot of fire in him,” said Ron Engles, another TU fan who says it’s time to change the culture at TU.

Engles believes TU needs to recruit more students from larger local high schools.

“They need to get more kids out of the surrounding schools like Jenks, Owasso, Bixby, Union, Broken Arrow,” Engles said.

As for who they think should be the next head coach at TU…

“Maybe someone who played here, Brennan Marion, is probably a good choice,” Engles said.

“There’s somebody out there. It’s a young man looking to make a name for himself,” Butcher said.

Ryan Switzer will fill in as interim coach until they find a new head coach to replace Wilson.
