South Korean prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for the former defense chief

South Korea’s political crisis continues to deepen following President Yoon Suk-yeol’s brief declaration of martial law. Yonhap news agency reports that prosecutors are seeking to arrest the country’s former defense minister for his alleged role.

Kim Yong-hyun is accused of treason. He is said to have advised Yoon to declare martial law last week and was detained on Sunday. A court is expected to hold a hearing on Tuesday to decide whether to grant prosecutors an arrest warrant.

Yonhap reports that the investigation will likely be extended to the president as well.

Members of the ruling People’s Power Party held several meetings to address the fallout. They seem to be discussing what the government might look like without Yoon’s involvement.

Yoon survived an impeachment vote led by the main opposition Democratic Party last week. The party plans to file a new impeachment motion with a vote on Saturday.
