Faculty vote of no confidence in Mott Community College’s 4 administrators

FLINT, MI – The Mott Community College faculty union has taken a vote of no confidence in four of the seven members of the college’s Board of Trustees.

Each of the four trustees — Andy Everman, Janet Couch, Jeffrey Swanson and Wendy Wolcott — voted to give controversial interim president Shaunda Richardson-Snell a permanent role as the college’s next president.

An “overwhelming” 94 percent of voting members of the Mott Community College Education Association (MCCEA) voted no confidence in the four members, according to a news release from the association.

The vote comes after the board’s outgoing attorney, William Brickley, disclosed a conflict of interest that he said should have overturned the original vote to give Richardson-Snell the job.

The trustee’s daughter Janet Couch served as Richardson-Snell’s real estate agent when she bought a house in Genesee County, Brickley said.

The acquisition took place in October, according to the statement. Richardson-Snell was offered the first time position in November.

Couch, Everman and Swanson each knew about the potential conflict of interest but did not bring it up during the vote, according to Brickley’s instructions. Brickley announced his resignation after revealing the conflict of interest.

Despite Richardson-Snell’s wishes for a national searchthe majority of the board reaffirmed the vote to offer him the job on December 2.

“The conflict of interest was the latest in a long line of missteps by these four trustees,” said MCCEA President Kim Owens. “They have consistently refused to listen to anyone at the college, including even the acting president, who called for a national search during the meeting where they installed her.”

Newly elected trustees Candice Miller and Kenyetta Dotson joined the board in January, replacing Everman and Michael Freeman. Freeman was one of three administrators the union left out of its vote of no confidence.

“This faculty vote of no confidence should send a strong message, from a very vocal majority of MCC educators, that our board must act with integrity and commit to a transparent and ethical national search for our next president of college,” Owens. said.

Everman could not immediately be reached for comment.
