HIV myths fuel risks – FBC News

Misinterpretation of HIV and AIDS awareness messages could unwittingly encourage risky sexual behavior among young people, according to Fiji Medical Association president Dr. Alipate Vakamocea.

He said accurate information is essential to support early detection and effective treatment of HIV.

Dr. Vakamocea said that while there is no cure for HIV, proper medication allows people to manage the virus and lead productive lives.

However, he cautions that these drugs only control the virus and do not eliminate it once contracted.

“There is no cure for HIV, but there is treatment available, and the treatment available can lower the viral load to the point where it’s undetectable, and once it’s undetectable, you can’t transmit it.”

The Minister of Health, dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, echoes the importance of early testing, stressing that the right drugs are available for those who prioritize their health and check their condition.

“To come out and be tested. Because a positive result is not a death sentence, as it was previously known, right now, if you are treated, you can survive, you can live a normal, productive life, as people living with HIV have experienced.”

UNAIDS Fiji Country Director Renata Ram reiterated prevention as the key strategy against HIV.

The Fiji Medical Association has stressed the need to dispel myths and misinformation about HIV and STDs.

Dr. Vakamocea said it is imperative to empower individuals with accurate knowledge, allowing them to make informed decisions and protect themselves.

Experts agree that early testing, treatment adherence and public education remain critical in combating the spread of HIV in Fiji.
