2 men charged with capital murder in separate Montgomery murders

Two men face capital murder charges in separate shootings in Montgomery.

One of the suspects is accused of killing a 26-year-old woman on Monday, and the other is accused of killing a 33-year-old man who police say was targeted for a robbery and chased to his home, where he was shot. .

Devondrick Robert Jones, 35, is charged in sdeposition of Courtney Gunn outside a Montgomery home.

The shooting happened just after 9 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of Georgia Street.

Gunn was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charging documents against Jones say the charge is capital because Gunn was inside a Volvo XC90 when she was killed.

A motive has not been disclosed.

Police Maj. Saba Coleman said Jones was arrested Wednesday. He remains held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Center.

Ja’Kyeri Kaleil McCovery, 19, is accused in November 22, shooting death of Marcelino Hernandez.

Hernandez and two other men were in line at the Raceway gas station on Troy Highway that Friday when, police say, McCovery targeted them for the robbery.

The suspect is accused of following them back to their homes. When they tried to run to safety inside their home, charging documents say, McCovery pointed a gun at them and demanded their valuables.

Hernandez was fatally shot when he refused.

McCovery is also charged with two counts of first-degree robbery for arresting Hernandez’s two friends.

McCovery was also taken into custody Wednesday and remains held without bond.
