In response to the crushing failure of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, Salam Mustapha, the national youth organizer of the party, said the party must reflect and rebuild.

The youth organizer acknowledged the pain and sadness experienced by party members, especially the youth who actively supported the campaign, in a Facebook message published on December 25, 2024, his first since the election.

It’s been a little over two weeks since the December 7 election, which we lost badly. I have read many of your analyzes of the election and its results on various platforms. Your spirits and souls are separating and I can feel it. Especially for the young people who gave everything for this campaign, I can understand your pain. I am more disturbed and sorry to disappoint you. I feel your anger,” he said.

Although the party put in a lot of effort during the campaign, Mustapha admitted that the leadership is ultimately to blame for the party’s defeat. He noted that the indifference of the party’s base to the vote and the effects of economic concerns were major factors in the loss.

“Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to achieve the results we were all looking for. It is acceptable to lose your temper and let your spleen out. As national executives, it’s okay to get our heads together. and even insults because of the idea of ultimate responsibility, despite our efforts, we could have achieved more by writing.

To lead the party through change and a more robust recovery, he called for a thorough post-mortem to examine the root causes of the defeat.

“The election results clearly show how indifferent our base is and how much the economic problems affect everything. A thorough and proper autopsy is needed to determine the reasons for the loss because there are so many other possible explanations. We will come back better and stronger .because of this,” he continued.

Mustapha reiterated the importance of reorganizing and repairing the internal institutions of the party, echoing the statements of the vice president dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flag bearer. He urged supporters to offer positive suggestions for important reforms and reaffirmed his commitment to the reconstruction effort.

With 6,328,397 votes, NDC presidential candidate John Mahama was declared winner by Electoral Commission Chairman Jean Mensa on December 9, 2024. NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes. An unprecedented parliamentary majority was also won by the NDC.

Mustapha had declared his unwavering belief in an NPP victory before the election, even going so far as to say, “If we lose this election… cut off my head.” Given the outcome, his current tone emphasizes the modesty and determination needed to lead the party.
