Weymouth man arrested for home burglary, car theft in Hingham

HINGHAM – A Weymouth man was arrested Monday morning after allegedly breaking into a Hingham home and stealing a car, according to Hingham Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Steven Dearth.

At 10:39 a.m. on Dec. 23, officers responded to a burglar alarm at a residence on Lazell Street. Upon arrival, they found the garage doors open, several open packages outside and the back doors of the house broken.

The owner, communicating through the home security system, reported that a white Mercedes was missing from the garage.

While the police were on the scene, the stolen Mercedes returned to the driveway.

The driver, upon noticing the presence of the police, quickly reversed and fled at high speed.

A pedestrian later flagged down an officer to report seeing the white sports car speeding toward Wompatuck State Park, located about a half-mile from the broken-in home.

Police located the stolen vehicle and the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Cole J.

McCarthy of South Weymouth, in a parking lot at Wompatuck State Park.

McCarthy was taken into custody without incident following several commands from officers.

An open container of beer and two plastic bags containing a substance believed to be cocaine were found in his possession.

McCarthy faces multiple charges including theft of a motor vehicle, felony daytime burglary, possession of a Class B substance, driving with a suspended license (subsequent offense) and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

Following his booking, McCarthy was arraigned the same day in Hingham District Court and was held on $2,500 bail.
