The barricade suspect has pleaded not guilty and has been denied supervised release

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The suspect allegedly behind a five-hour barricade at a busy Honolulu store will not be granted supervised release.

Karon Hayes, 34, is charged with criminal damage to property for allegedly throwing liquor bottles and setting off a fire sprinkler at the Don Quijote store on Kaheka Street, causing more than $30,000 in damage.

Police said he then barricaded himself in a storage room for five hours, prompting the evacuation of shoppers and employees.

Hayes entered a not guilty plea Thursday, appearing virtually in court.

Hayes’ public defender argued for his supervised release, telling the judge, “Living in Hawaii, he has committed a minor misdemeanor, but other than that, he has no record, no prior offenses, and I believe that Mr. Hayes would be a good. candidate for supervised release.”

The prosecution did not agree.

“The defendant entered Don Quixote, which had a number of employees and civilian customers present, and took a lighter, entered the liquor area, attempted to light a beer. He threw bottles off the shelves, threw bottles at people and then proceeded to act inappropriately with the police officers, using insults and other offensive words,” said the prosecutor.

Ultimately, Judge Ronald Johnson agreed with the prosecution, saying “supervised release is not appropriate for the community.”

Hayes’ bail was set at $11,000.

His trial is set for February 24.
