The Manitoba Youth Parliament opens its 103rd session

The Youth Parliament of Manitoba (YPM) officially opened its 103rd session Thursday, giving young people a chance to learn about the parliamentary process.

During the winter session, which will take place from December 26-31, the group will debate the following legislation:

  • Voter’s Law for Open and Transparent Elections;
  • Child Protection Law; and
  • Equity in Education Act.

“(Youths) come here to express their opinions and also listen to the opinions of others so they can learn more about the world and the different policies we have,” said Xiao Zhang, who is part of the YPM.

YPM is a non-partisan, non-denominational, youth-led organization. It is a model parliament that gives young adults a chance to learn about democracy, improve communication skills and meet other young people in the province.

The session is YPM’s flagship event, offering young adults the chance to debate current issues in a model parliamentary environment. This five-day overnight event is aimed at young people between the ages of 16 and 20.

“It’s definitely an opportunity to learn what parliament is like,” Zhang said.

“It’s an opportunity to meet our current politicians, talk to them, learn about their jobs and see if it’s a good fit for them going forward.”
