Former CoCT member Mayco Booi, alleged Stanfield gang boss, linked in corruption case

CAPE TOWN – More than a year after former Cape Town Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, told EWN he wanted his day in court over corruption allegations, that day has finally arrived.

In September this year, he was in the dock after being arrested at his farm in the Eastern Cape.

The arrest was the result of a lengthy police investigation that culminated when Booi’s office was raided by the Hawks in March 2023 on suspicion of corruption.

At the time, Booi was alleged to have accepted bribes from underworld individuals in exchange for information on construction tenders within his directorate.

Laptops and cellphones were seized from Booi and some of his staff as part of the police investigation into allegations of corruption within the city’s human settlements department.

Booi was suspended as a Democratic Alliance (DA) councilor shortly after the raid and fired from his position a week later.

In September, Booi was arrested along with nine other people, including his ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend, in a multi-billion rand tender fraud case.

The state has since added more defendants to the indictment, including alleged 28-year-old gang leader Ralph Stanfield and his wife, Nicole Johnson.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said they are all accused of being part of Stanfield and Johnson’s criminal enterprise.

“As we speak, we have 26 accused in this case. We have decided, as a State, to join the cases because they overlap. enterprise and were working together, meaning their activities overlapped.”

Booi and nine of his co-accused are out on bail, while 16 others are behind bars.

The group will be back in the bank on January 31st.

They face 54 charges including murder, fraud and corruption.
