Storm shelters in central Alabama are open for potential severe weather

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Central Alabama storm shelters are now open for possible severe weather tonight and sunday morning.

The city of Alabaster says the storm shelter at Thompson High School is now open. The main entrance to the shelter will be at the back of the school, off D Holway. No animals, except registered service dogs, are allowed in the shelter. Officials say seating will be limited in the area, so if you plan to go to the shelter, you are advised to consider a portable chair.

In Montevallo, the city says they have opened two storm shelters. “Storm Shelter #1” is located in Stephens Park, 500 Co. Rd 10 and “Storm Shelter #2” is located at 20 James Jones Dr. To access “Storm Shelter #2”, enter off Island St. and park near the shelter. Officials say the shelter will be open until it is safe for citizens to return home.

The the city of Helena says the storm shelter at Helena High School is now open. For those who wish to seek cover, you may enter the rear of the school near the patrol vehicles. The city says no pets allowed.

Pelham storm shelter at Pelham Park Middle School is now open as shelter for those in need.

The City of Birmingham says that Pratt City storm shelters are now open for potential severe thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow morning.

Clanton officials say all storm shelters in the city of Clanton are open

In Trussville, the storm shelter at Magnolia Elementary School is now open. You are required to go to the front of the school to enter. Shelters are also open at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School, Cahaba Elementary School and Paine Elementary School.
