Pacific leaders celebrated 2025 New Year Honors List — thecoconet.tv

The 2025 New Year’s Honors List proudly celebrates recipients from the Pacific for their outstanding contributions to health, business, youth and community development. Thirteen people of Pacific descent were recognized for their dedication and inspirational leadership.

Honoring champions for survivors of abuse

  • Mrs Moeapulu Frances Eileen Tagaloa – Was appointed a Companion of the King’s Service Order (KSO) for services to survivors of care abuse.

  • Mr. Rupene Paul Amato – Was appointed a Companion of the King’s Service Order (KSO) for services to survivors of care abuse.

Tagaloa’s work with survivor counseling groups has been instrumental in promoting healing and justice. She expressed her gratitude, saying: “It’s such an honour. I accept this on behalf of all survivors who have been affected.”

Amato highlighted the challenges men face in sharing their stories of abuse, noting, “Sharing stories allows other people to share.” He dedicated his honor to those who “died or are still fighting” and described himself as “a warrior for social justice”.

  • Mrs. Debra Mary Delores Sorensen – For services to Pacific Health

  • Mr. Iosefo Fa’afiu – For services to mental health, youth and the community in the Pacific

  • Mrs. Anne Maria Fitisemanu – For services to business

Community and environmental advocates

  • Ms. Shelley Aroha Katae – For services to Maori and Pacific communities

  • Mrs. Tania Mateohorere-Carole Pouwhare – For services to Māori and Pacific communities and to the environment

Heroes dedicated to the community

  • Miss Vaine Puapii Elia – For services to the community in the Cook Islands

  • Mrs Rouruina Emile-Brown – For services to the community in the Cook Islands

  • Mr. Hans Allen Key – For services to Health and Safety and communities in the Pacific

  • Mr. Petru Fala Aprile Leilua and Mrs. Tiliilagi Leilua – For services to the community, particularly to young people and Pacific peoples

  • Miss Teremoana Terepai – For services to the Pacific community and to Older People

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted the courage of those honoured, particularly the supporters of abuse survivors, saying: “The courage it takes to fight for justice after suffering so much themselves is not only deserving of an honour, it must be recognised.”

These honorees embody resilience, compassion and an unwavering commitment to uplifting their communities. Fa’afetai tele lava, malo ‘aupito and meitaki ma’ata to these inspiring individuals. The Pacific Community celebrates your achievements with pride!
