Police in Colorado say they are looking for the person who threw a dog through a car window while driving, severing the animal’s spine.

Commerce City police said the tragedy happened on Nov. 23. Officers were told the dog was thrown through the passenger side window.

Authorities said a good Samaritan saw what happened and tried to help the dog before first responders arrived. When first responders arrived, they transported him to an emergency vet.

Due to the broken spine, the dog was said to be in “tremendous pain and unable to move” before having to be euthanized.

Police later said they were contacted by the dog’s owner, who said the dog was left in the backyard when the owner went out, but disappeared before the owner returned.

Authorities said the person or persons responsible for the incident will be charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
