The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday told its polling machinery in Delhi to ensure revision and updating of electoral rolls as per statutory provisions with the involvement of political parties, sources said.

The commission stressed the need for strict adherence to its instructions while updating the voter list in Delhi, where elections are scheduled early next year.

Sources said the poll commission told Delhi officials that representatives of political parties should be involved in the electoral roll revision process with “full transparency and disclosures”.

It said that all complaints and grievances from political parties should be promptly and concretely addressed.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi and other concerned officials have also been instructed that the lists of demands and objections must be shared weekly with political parties and published on the websites of the Chief Electoral Officer and District Electoral Officers.

Further, no deletion is allowed without conducting field verification and providing voters with a notice to ensure they have an opportunity to be heard, the EC told the CEO and its officials.

The officials were directed to look into the issues raised by the political parties regarding the revision of electoral rolls and submit factual details for further revision by the commission.

This comes in the backdrop of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation meeting the polling authority on Wednesday to urge it to stop any deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

The term of the Delhi Assembly ends on February 23 and elections are likely to be held in February itself.
