Fire officials believe the Butternut brush fire in the Berkshires was caused by human activity, but admit it could be a challenge to be more precise.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the outbreak Butternut brush fire in Berkshire, but firefighters say it was caused by human activity.

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly how it started due to the size of the fire, among other factors, NewsChannel 13’s media partners at The Berkshire Eagle reported.

There was no evidence of a campfire or any ignition source, Great Barrington’s fire chief said.

It is not clear what kind of activity caused the fire, nor if it was intentional.

The fire burned more than 1,600 acres near Great Barrington in November.

Firefighters removed vegetation and dead leaves to stop the fire from spreading. Rain and snow then helped extinguish the hot spots, the newspaper reported.
