Woman who accused Diddy and Jay-Z of raping her can remain anonymous for now, judge rules

A woman who has accused Sean “Diddy” Combs and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter raped her after an awards show in 2000 when she was 13 can remain anonymous as her trial continues, a federal judge has ruled.

The woman’s lawsuit was originally filed in October — one of several anonymous civil complaints filed by Texas attorney Tony Buzbee against Combs. The lawsuit was amended in December to include Carter, who denied the allegations.

Carter filed a motion earlier this month asking the judge to deny the plaintiff’s request to remain anonymous, asking either her identity be revealed or the lawsuit dismissed.

However, in a ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres said the woman can remain anonymous for now — though she may reconsider her ruling in the future.

The judge said the sexual assault allegations were highly sensitive and deeply personal in nature and that the woman who filed the lawsuit was “particularly vulnerable to the potential harm of disclosure” because, according to her lawsuit, she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder . stress disorder and a seizure disorder associated with the stress of sexual assault.

In his ruling, the judge acknowledged that the plaintiff’s continued anonymity “may cause prejudice to the defendants by making it more difficult for them to gather the facts necessary to mount their defense” and challenged the plaintiff’s credibility.

But citing the “extremely early stage in this case,” the judge ruled the woman could remain anonymous for now.

“Plaintiff is advised that because the balance of these factors will certainly change as this case proceeds, particularly if and when the parties seriously engage in discovery, the Court intends to revisit this decision at a future date,” the judge wrote in it. deciding

The plaintiff, who claims in her lawsuit that Jay-Z and Sean Combs assaulted her at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party, recognized inconsistencies with her account. However, she stood by her allegations.

Carter and his lawyer strongly denied the allegations in both public statements and in court filings, accusing Buzbee, the woman’s attorney, of waging an “extortion campaign” against him.

The judge admonished Carter’s attorney for some of his legal maneuvering.

“Carter’s counsel’s relentless filing of combative motions containing inflammatory language and ad hominem attacks is inappropriate, a waste of judicial resources and a tactic unlikely to benefit his client. The court will not speed up the judicial process just because the lawyer asks for it.”

Combs, who was it? arrested in September on sex-trafficking charges, remains in custody at the Federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Last month, a judge denied him bail in the case.

Combs has denied any wrongdoing.
