“Do not travel” issued Thursday: The US State Department warns residents not to visit the country

The US State Department has issued the highest level of travel advisory for the Central African Republic, urging residents to avoid the nation.

The level 4 advisory, which warns would-be travel planners not to travel, comes as the nation grapples with “armed conflict, crime, civil unrest and kidnapping.” according to the State Department.

“While there have been no specific incidents of violence or threats targeting US citizens, there is a continued risk of civil unrest, demonstrations and election-related violence (including renewed outbreaks of armed conflict) across the country, including in the capital Bangui . ”, reads part of the notice.

The US Embassy, ​​which is located in Bangui, currently has limited capacity to provide support to US citizens, as indicated in the advisory.

“Common” violent crimes at this time include murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated battery, and theft.

“Armed groups and opposition forces control large areas of the country and regularly abduct, injure and/or kill civilians. In the event of disruption, airport, land border crossings and road closures may occur with or without notice,” the advisory explained.

As detailed in the warning, the US government has “limited capacity” to provide emergency services to citizens of the Central African Republic.

Those US government employees in the Central African Republic must obtain special authorization to travel outside of Bangui. The families of these officials are prohibited from accompanying those working in the country.

In addition to the violence and unrest, the advisory makes residents aware of the limited medical care in the Central African Republic. Medical facilities in the country are “limited in quality and standard of care”.
