The last bank robbery suspect Chinhat also arrested

Lucknow: Lucknow police on Friday arrested the seventh and final accused involved in the sensational overseas Indian Bank heist at the Chinhat branch.
Mithun Kumar Bind28, a resident of Munger district in Bihar, was nabbed near Nera Crossing on Dewa Road. Mithun carried a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head for information leading to his capture.
The heist involved a gang who looted valuables from 42 of the bank’s 90 lockers, cutting a 2.5ft hole in the wall in the early hours of Sunday. The incident came to light when a shopkeeper noticed the hole the next morning and alerted the authorities.
Recovery of stolen valuables
Police recovered Rs 1 lakh in cash, 126.14 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 9.89 lakh, 893 grams of silver worth Rs 80,147, 13 pieces of bank lockers, a grinder, a hammer, a chisel and two mobile phones from Mithun. “The accused was trying to escape to his native Bihar in a two-wheeler carrying cash, precious jewelery and tools used in the crime when he was apprehended,” said Additional DCP (East Zone) Pankaj Singh.
Role in theft
The police revealed that Mithun was entrusted with critical tasks by the mastermind of the gang, Vipin. On the night of the robbery, Mithun was standing outside the bank as a security guard. His job was to monitor the area for police movement and to signal the lane using a torch or specific sounds in case of any danger.
Apart from being the gang’s watchman, Mithun was instrumental in the planning phase of the heist. Two or three weeks before the murder, he did reconnaissance around the bank during the night. He was tasked with identifying vulnerabilities, observing police patrol patterns, and monitoring the response of nearby police vehicles. This meticulous preparation allowed the gang to execute the heist with precision.
Police statement
“Mithun’s arrest is a significant breakthrough as it completes the chain of arrests in this case,” said a senior police official. “He played the dual role of monitoring the area during the crime and providing information about the bank’s vulnerabilities beforehand.”
The investigation continues to uncover more details about the gang’s operations and the ultimate fate of the stolen valuables. The arrest of all the named accused is seen as a significant victory for the Lucknow police.
