Janice said her son developed a strong work ethic at a young age.

“One day he came home and told me he wanted to start a paper trail,” she said The New Yorker in 2002. “That’s how he started. He always wanted to work and make his money. We had a Cadillac car and a house and he liked life that way.”

Diddy attended Howard Universitywhich his mother called the “Black Harvard”. She felt proud of his enrollment in school, but he began to set his sights elsewhere. Before long, Diddy quit working for Andre Harrell at Uptown Records. His mother, who was a teacher, did not agree.

“I was really so disappointed by it,” Janice said. “A person works day and night just to educate a child and be able to have a roof over their head and a school uniform. He was a good student, and when he left the university it was difficult for me”.

He talked about his relationship with his mother

Diddy felt grateful to his mother for everything she did for him while he was growing up.

“(My mother) he loves me so muchand she’s so proud of me,” he said in a 2006 interview with Oprah Winfreyadding, “He almost killed himself to make sure I went to private schools, to expose me to travel. He made sure that I never looked down on others. And she lit a fire in me.”

He also praised how she stood by him during his 2001 trial following a nightclub shooting.

“She wanted me to be bigger than my circumstances,” he said. “During the process, she was by my side every step of the way.”

What did Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mother say about the allegations against him?

Just as Janice supported her son in 2001, she supports him in the midst of the storm of the recent accusations against him. Diddy is currently in prison on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. In a statement, Janice said she was “devastated and deeply saddened” by the allegations (via BBC).

“It is heartbreaking to see my son judged not for the truth but for a narrative created from lies,” she wrote.

While she added that she doesn’t think Diddy is “perfect,” she strongly believes he’s “not the monster they’ve painted him out to be.”

“My son may not have been entirely truthful about certain things, such as denying that he ever became violent with an ex-girlfriend when hotel surveillance showed otherwise,” she said. “Sometimes truth and lies become so closely intertwined that it becomes terrifying to admit one side of the story, especially when that truth is outside the norm or too complicated to believe. This is why I believe my son’s civil legal team chose to settle the ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit instead of fighting it to the end, which backfired because the federal government used that decision against the son interpreting it as an admission of guilt. “
