A family member cancels the relative’s gifted holiday without telling them

One person explained his “petty” decision to take back a Christmas present he gave a relative.

One recent post shared on the popular Reddit forum “Petty Revenge,” a social media user said he canceled the “gifted vacation” he got a relative without telling anyone. According to the original poster, (OP), this family member is a “s***ty” and they have had some “differences” in the past. However, the pair “made up” before the holidays.

“So this year for Christmas we gave them a holiday they really wanted to take. I printed the reservation and gave it as a gift,” they wrote.

However, the relative did not offer a gift back because they allegedly had “too many things” to do and “totally forgot” about the Reddit poster. The relative also continued to make “passive-aggressive remarks” about their family member’s “house and food” as the social media user hosted the Christmas party.

As a result, the Redditor said they eventually took back the gift without telling their relative.

“So petty, I canceled their vacation without telling them after I knew they were heading to their destination. Yes, there are fees, but I don’t care,” they wrote. “I know they’ll be (o) squeamish about booking anything else and instead go home fumigated and pissed off.”

The post quickly went viral with over 8,000 upvotes. In the comments, the Reddit user responded to people who criticized them for giving such an expensive gift to a family member they weren’t close to.

Her poster went on to claim that they were “caught up in” feeling like they had to help their family and felt “guilty” that they weren’t there for them.

“So I’m trying to give back or help with otherwise hard-to-achieve dreams this Christmas – but yeah, I’m definitely not appreciated and I’ve also felt cheated by everything we ‘made up,'” they added.

In another comment, they claimed that they expected their relative to speak ill of them to their siblings. So, they plan to make up reasons why they canceled the trip, like, “You told (my brother) you thought it was stupid/cheap/whatever and you didn’t like the gift, so I thought I’d better cancel.”

Many readers continue to criticize the Reddit user for buying the vacation as a gift in the first place.

“I have to ask, if you really didn’t care about this person, why did you give them an entire vacation? Who gives a vacation to real people, let alone someone they don’t even like much?” wrote one.

“There are members of my family that I kind of tolerate, but if they gave me a holiday, I would pretend to like them and be very friendly. That’s shooting yourself in the foot for no reason,” replied another.

However, others applauded their decision to cancel the trip without telling their relative.

“I love this, not only is it tiny, it’s 100% AWESOME! Next year make sure you ask them in front of everyone how their trip was,’ one wrote, while another added: ‘The motive was petty but the revenge was merciless.’

“It is mean and cruel. You are my hero,” joked a third.
