Man dies of injuries from officer-involved shooting in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A man died Friday from injuries sustained in a officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday.

Omaha police said Friday night that the man, identified as 37-year-old Rafael Crespo, died at a hospital.

As of Friday, OPD said an officer involved in the incident still needs to be interviewed and an autopsy will be performed on Crespo. The OPD Officer Involved Investigation Team continues to investigate the shooting.

More information will come from OPD once these steps are completed.

Crespo and a 36-year-old woman were injured in the incident that Omaha police told 6 News Thursday morning began as a domestic violence call near South 43rd and Frances streets around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When they arrived at the scene, they heard gunshots and a woman “physically struggling in the building,” according to an OPD report released Thursday afternoon. “Arriving officers heard gunshots coming from inside a south-facing office and heard a woman screaming from an interior closet. Officers entered the building, located the office and could still hear gunshots coming from the office closet.”

The incident was captured by police body-worn and cruiser cameras. No officers were injured in the incident, authorities say.

The officers immediately opened the closet door, with two of them firing their weapons, the report said.

OPD said officers were able to remove the woman from the closet and take her to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The man is also in hospital with extremely critical injuries after being given life-saving measures.

“It was determined that the male and female were once in a domestic relationship,” the OPD statement said.

A gun was found next to the man in the closet, the report said.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the officer-involved shooting investigation.
