Top Chennai cop secures action in Tamil Nadu university sex assault, points to technical glitch behind FIR leak – Tamil Nadu News

In a press meet, Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun gave updates on the ongoing investigation case of sexual assault at Anna University.

On December 24, the police received a complaint from a student and a teacher of the university’s POSH team, which led to the registration of an FIR. Arun stated that the FIR was written exactly as per the victim’s statement, stressing that the police cannot change it. “We are committed to reproducing the victim’s words as they are,” he stated.

After forming four special teams and collecting evidence, the police arrested the accused, Gnanasekharan, on December 25.

Addressing the BJP leader’s allegations Annamalai on FIR leakArun explained that technical glitches during the transition from the IPC to the NBS delayed the automatic blocking of FIRs, possibly allowing the leak. He condemned the leak as “legally wrong” and assured that a case had been made to identify and punish those responsible.

Arun confirmed that Gnanasekharan is the only suspect so far. He also revealed that the accused was involved in 20 previous cases related to theft and property crimes, but none related to sexual assault. Gnanasekharan has been convicted in six cases, with trials pending in others. Arun added that no further complaints have been received against him, but the investigation is ongoing.

On campus security, Arun noted that Anna University employs 140 security personnel, including ex-servicemen. Police are also considering improvements such as assessing the height of compound walls.

Arun emphasized that the police remain impartial in their investigation. “We don’t care which party the culprit belongs to, we will take action regardless,” he said.
